Why is linseed tea good for you?
Normally we hear about linseeds, or flax seeds, because they are packed full of omega 3 essential fats, but not so well known is that tea made from the seeds is also therapeutic. We all know we need to be better hydrated and drink more water. Water round the cells is like oil in an engine, without it they can’t function properly! Even if you have a great diet your body can’t take advantage of it if you are dehydrated.
The answer is to drink more, but if you are stressed your body can be like a badly watered hanging basket. The water just goes straight through, hardly touching the sides! Linseed tea helps, because it is slightly gelatinous, this soothes and relaxes the colon, and allows it to absorb more water.

The tea is made by boiling a few linseeds in water and drinking the resulting stock. Ideally it needs to be just a bit thicker than water and have a faint nutty taste. If you use too many seeds it comes out very gloopy, but don’t worry you can dilute it with more hot water.
The teas viscosity means the water will hold longer in the colon, and get absorbed better. It’s exactly the same principle as the special compost in hanging baskets, which contains gel to hold the water in the soil for longer.
Minor dehydration is the hidden cause of many illnesses. Drinking linseed tea, having a healthy diet and managing your stress is a sound basis for good health. Another benefit is that it will hydrate your skin, so you will look better too!
Horse owners have always fed their animals linseeds to give them a shiny equine coat, but it can work for us too!

How to Make Linseed Tea

This is me making flax (linseed) tea during a visit to India. It really helped me recover from jet lag, and adjust to the heat.

I sprinkled a teaspoon of linseeds in a saucepan and covered it with 1 litre of water.

I brought it to the boil and simmered for 20 minutes.

…and drank a cupful 2-3 times a day!
Flaxseed Tea
Ingredients
1 tsp linseeds
1 ltr water
Method
1. In a suitable pan add 2 teaspoon of linseeds to 1 litre of cold water.
2. Leave the linseeds to soak overnight.
3. Bring it to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes.
4. Sieve the linseeds out and throw away.
5. Serve warm. Store in the fridge. You can add hot water to warm it up.
To Serve
This tea can be thinned down with hot water to your desired consistency.

Thanks for your interesting information.
Do you think it is acceptable to conserve the lineseed tea in the frigo by some days?
Thanks in advance.
yes will keep in the fridge for a few days, can go off quite quickly in a warm room. I add a bit of hot water to warm it up to drink
This flax tea is excellent…only been using for a few days & have already seen very promising results…..I made it for my father who had very bad constipation due to medication & it certainly helped! I am now myself drinking 2-3 cups each day & recommend it to anyone. Good work! Thanks.
Thanks, so pleased it has been useful for you
do i have to grind the seeds or whole will work the same.?
Hi Harlette, You just use the whole seeds it works better that way, thanks keith
Thanks Keith, I’ve been making linseed tea finding out about its benefits on Barbara Wren’s natural Nutrition diploma. Very soothing and grounding. Just wondering if drinking too much linseed tea without drinking enough additional water can lead to constipation and wind though…I have my suspicions.. What do you think?
Thanks again,
Alan
Hi Alan, I agree about not drinking linseed tea exclusively. Would be good to have some plain water and other drinks too, about half / half. With any herb or remedy it’s useful to have a break every so often, perhaps one day off per week or month and a few days break every three months.
Hope that helps regards Keith

What if you don’t soak just drink after it boils and cools off?
[…] Linseed tea can help. It has a relaxing effect on your colon, and makes the water slightly more viscous and easy to absorb. […]
Thank you so much Keith and Samiya for the wonderful kooking and healthtips you gave this Sunday in Riemst. I learned so much and started right away making the linseed tea. Thank you for your love and kindness, you are wonderful people!
We stumbled over here by a different web page and thought I might as well

Look forward to looking at your web page repeatedly.
Hello, should I need to strain the seeds or I’ll drink it too with the water?
Normally you strain off the seeds to make the tea
Hi Keith,
By the way I am from Bermuda and I would like to know if you suggest adding some honey and lemon for great taste… I’ve done this before, it’s like lemonade..
Thanks for you info..
Hi. I found a different way to make this tea on another website. Same method, only difference is to use ground flax seed. My question is are you supposed to strain the whole or ground seeds out of the water or do you leave it in there and drink it?
Yes do strain the seeds out of the water. I think whole seeds are better to make the tea which is made from the outside of the seed. When you grind linseeds the oil goes off very quickly, so best to grind your own just before you use them.
I have started drinking linseed tea , about 3-4 small cups a day . However , I think if I have it in the
evening it is disrupting my sleep , I just dont feel tired ! Anyone have similar experience ?
